Since my original goal was to get the adjustment screws for the diagonal close enough to the front of the telescope that I would not need an absurdly long wrench, the 4" long screws and a standard hex wrench solved the problem adequately. Perhaps a larger diameter head would have worked better.

That Nice Idea About Putting Thumb Screw Heads on 8-32 SHCS screws
I did it with some 4" long SHCS screws and discovered that I could not exert enough force to move the screws. They are not very large diameter and the required force to turn them was beyond what my fingers could exert..
