Relative References in Word

I have links to a spreadsheet from Word.  By default, those links are a full path to the Excel file:

C:\\Users\\clayton\\Documents\\WRITING\\MassMurder\\MassMurderIntermediary.xlsx

I need this set of files to be portable (allowing me to send the Word, Excel, and Access files to someone else.)  I tried

.\\MassMurderIntermediary.xlsx

and

MassMurderIntermediary.xlsx

In both cases, Error! Not a valid link

Suggestions?

  2. when I search for "relative references in Word document", I get lots of results for doing the opposite: turning a relative-reference hyperlink to an absolute-path-hyperlink.

The Microsoft support item that may be on-point is here.

Can you find the "Update links on Save" option for that file? Most of the distinction may be based on that.
