Tapmatic

I was a bit concerned about the sound:

But it did do what I wanted.  The problem was that I needed to through hole tap, and the hole wasn't deep enough.  Also, it takes several passes, just like tapping by hand, because of debris buildup.

  1. Use a thread forming tap like a Balax thredfloer. No chips.

  2. Consider adding an air nozzle(s) close to the working bit, to move the chips out and away from the hole. You wouldn't need a running compressor while the mill is running, just a decent size storage tank that a small compressor could fill up earlier. A solenoid to actuate the air line at appropriate times, controlled by your CNC system, should do the trick.
