The drug they are buying is called Nplate which is used for people with low platelet counts. Why?
Because acute radiation sickness lowers white blood cell count (increasing infection risk) and platelet counts (inducing hemorrhage).
It is a little scary how much I remembered enough to look for sources what I already knew.
