Ammo Can Giveaway
Bulk Munitions has an ammo can giveway. The only virtue of ammo cans, in my opinion is that they provide EMP shielding for your ammo. (You may need a lead to ground from the can to make this work. I would love to test this, but the neighbors would likely get testy if I set off even a subkiloton device to test it.)

Why does your small-arms ammo need to be EMP protected?
ReplyDeleteCase to case contact can apparently set off primers.
ReplyDeleteSo, an EMP will ignite ammo in gun magazines? Really? I would imagine the .gov would be overjoyed if that was practical. Easy way to disarm everyone!
ReplyDeleteWhere did this data originate?
They are good for storing drone batteries, because they will reportedly contain the fire if the batteries malfunction.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be unlikely to ignite ammo. EMP has very high power, but surprisingly low energy per square meter. So, it can fry transistors, especially if the circuitry is turned on. I really, really doubt it would ignite ammo. The EMP effect would be just a bit stronger than you would get by touching your finger to the ammo after getting a static charge from a rug or whatever.
ReplyDeletePut another way - the EMP might generation tens of thousands of volts, but only for a few tens of nanoseconds up to maybe 500 nanoseconds. But to set off a detonator, you need to heat it or mechanically shock it, and I don't think there is enough energy there to do it.
