I am running out of space for ammunition. 900 rounds of 5.56mm in a metal ammo can arrived from our ammunition dealer sponsor arrived today. The wall of radiation shielding keeps getting larger. In a steel can just makes it better.
Stack it one layer deep at the bottom of a closet. Put a piece of plywood on top of that.. Use that plywood (and perhaps a suitable cover) as the "floor" of the closet.
you can generally go about a foot "up" before it becomes a problem.
I too store a lot of ammo in ammo cans - to quickly ID the calibers I spray paint the ends in different colors: 5.56 is blue, .45 ACP is red, 9mm is green, 12 ga is white, etc
