Long Sentence Unintended Consequences

Reason talks about the  insanely complex gun ban bill introduced in Congress, with 15 year minimum sentences for failing to get a license to own guns or ammunition.

What the gun control crowd seems not to get: if you are 70 or 75, 15 years is a life sentence.   If you are terminal, crotchety, with no close family (and I have known a few that fit today perfectly) the difference between capital punishment for treason and 15 years for gun ban violation is likely zero.  At least you will get medical care in prison or while the courts hear 20 years of appeals of your death sentence.  If you watched Gran Torino, think back to why our crotchety ex-Marine decides to solve the Hmong gang problem the way that he does: he has nothing left to lose.

  1. This is the opening bid. Democrats have found that asking for the moon will result in some chunks of freedom will be compromised away by the Republicans. We give they take, wash, rinse, repeat.

  2. Considering the bill was written in 2019 it would be interesting how much support it has post Covid-19 and the surge in gun ownership. Biden has already shown a willingness to backslide on promises made during the campaign and the house lost dems in the election. Biden doesn't want to loose Senate and House in a 2022 mid-term retaliation.

  3. I resemble that and already have thought about how much more Government it would take. But I have as yet no plans.

  4. Treason seems inapt; nobody in that case is likely to adhere to the Enemies of the United States (not that there are a lot of those at the moment, in treason clause terms).

Nor are they going to wage war on the United States, which is not the same thing as, say, the presumed implication of "the politicians responsible for their legal predicament".

That's just plain ol' murder, maybe domestic terrorism.

  5. A recurring thought I have when reading bills/laws like this = "is this what leaders of a foreign army would do to US citizens" and answer = yes. If America were invaded a'la Red Dawn then first up is firearms confiscation and severe penalties for resisting. Same as what dimmos are doing and have been doing for decades. "Seize the gun means seize the power".

  6. HR127 has no co-sponsors as of today. Rep. Lee has had no as in zero substantial bills that she has sponsored enacted into law.

  7. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chen_Sheng_Wu_Guang_uprising

Chen Sheng and Wu Guang were both army officers who were ordered to lead their bands of commoner soldiers north to participate in the defense of Yuyang (simplified Chinese: 渔阳; traditional Chinese: 漁陽). However, they were stopped halfway in present-day Anhui province by flooding from a severe rainstorm. The harsh Qin laws mandated execution for those who showed up late for government jobs, regardless of the nature of the delay. Figuring that they would rather fight for their freedom than face execution, Chen and Wu organized a band of 900 villagers to rebel against the government.
