Volcanic Ash

We needed some resurfacing of the back driveway, and some neighbors have had interesting results with a white volcanic ash.  After rain, it seems to harden.  What is volcanic ash?  It is typically 5% quicklime (CaO): calcium carbonate heated by lava burns off the carbon dioxide.  And guess what?  Quicklime is the core binding agent in Roman cement
