One of the problems with aluminum is it tends to stick to cutting tool surfaces. This can stop the tool from removing metal. With a drill bit, it only has to clog one flute, and it will stop moving through the metal, as the cutting edges can no longer reach the parent metal. Side cutting with a mill bit works a little better in that case, but gets erratic in path, and will vibrate. Small diameter bits will break easier in this situation, due to flexing stress.
