A Gun For East Indian Women

You may be aware of the horrendous rape-murders in India that have been getting substantial international press attention.  January 16, 2014 BBC reports on a new effort to arm Indian women:
In his large office on Kanpur's Kalpi Road, Abdul Hameed, the general manager of the state-run Indian Ordnance Factory, shows me Nirbheek, the factory's tiniest gun.

"It's small, it's lightweight, it weighs only 500g [1.1lb], and it can easily fit into a lady's purse."

Hameed speaks enthusiastically about the .32-calibre revolver, praising the "special titanium alloy body, the pleasing-to-the-eye wooden handle".

"The six-shot gun is easy to handle and it can hit its target accurately up to 15m [50ft]," he explains, pointing out the word "Nirbheek" engraved on the barrel.

Although men can buy the gun too, Nirbheek is being pitched as India's "first gun for women" and to make it more attractive to them, it comes packaged in a deep maroon jewellery case.
Amazngly enough, the article quotes an Indian police chief (a woman) in support of Indian women being armed for self-defense.  Of course, the usual gun control fools talk about how the victim after whom the gun is named could not have afforded it, because she was poor, and guns are expensive.  Obviously, the government needs to show its commitment to protecting women with a handgun subsidy program for them.

  1. While a gun for women is a great idea, the article reveals fail on so many levels:
$1990 for a basic pistol...by the government factory. Guns banned at many common places. License required. Murder charges for self defense.

  2. It's a start. It 10% of the female population starts to think about armed self-defense as an option, it makes the idea respectable.

  3. Agreed. For the sake of women, other potential criminal victims, and potential victims of another Mumbai style attack.
