This, Apparently, Is A Sun Pillar

My wife took a picture of this at sunrise during the winter, and until this last issue of Astronomy, we had no idea what the formal term for this phenomenon was:


It is caused, no, not by aliens calling the mothership, but by ice crystals in the atmosphere falling and reflecting sunlight.
