This is Sherline's anti-chatter slogan. On the mill this is obvious: turn down the motor speed, increase the feed rate as the mill end crosses the workpiece. Until watching one of This Old Tony's machining videos, I had no idea what the feed was for a lathe. In his uniquely humorous way, he explained that when facing, the feed rate is how fast the cutting tool crosses the surface. When cutting down the diameter, the feed rate is the speed down the workpiece, right to left.
I have ruined a lot of cutting tools because I did not understand that.
