I Bought a Garrett Ace 300 Metal Detector

It had excellent reviews.   And made in the USA (as long as Texas and rest of us are still part of it, instead of the Reformed States of America,  or my favorite, the Confederation of Northwest America (get the prairie provinces to join us) a major oil and coal producer, wheat, cattle, manufactured goods, and electronics.

So far, I have demonstrated that my backyard has no real history: no Penneys, dimes, double eagles.   Not even any nails.  A pretty complete set of controls for discriminating among metals (is that still allowed?)

  1. And wouldn't you have lighted up like a Christmas tree if you HAD found something other than a nail (probably a roofing nail) on your can-this-thing work initial test run? :-)

I'm thinking back yards are by far the most common testing arena for new detectors -- handy and private. Good luck with your searches.

  2. We needed to find the access to our water shutoff valve, and a long and fruitless search of our front yard didn't turn up the access cover.

A few sweeps with a newly bought entry level metal detector did the job.

It was neat to use it, and based on your post I think we will do some yard exploring when true spring is here.

  3. Headphones will help you hear things and you will *need* a pinpointer. Set yourself up a belt or vest with all your 'stuff' for going out. Kneepads are also something you're going to want.

Do a little searching and you can find out about any regulations in your area. Most places are ok with you if you stick to the 'little to no evidence' standard - cut a neat plug of the grass, use a plastic sheet to catch your dug dirt and then put the dirt and grass back as neatly as you can when you're done.

Oh - and you get to decide how to set your discriminator settings. Do you want to see nickels or avoid pull tabs? They look about the same to the detector. You'll be amazed at how much drinking goes on at some parks.
