Illuminated Reticle Rifle Scopes

Do any of you have an opinion as to utility?  My understanding is that when the tsrget is in low light conditions,  illuminated reticle simplifies getting on target and using whatever information is provided by the reticle.   I suspect a few of you have made tactical use of such.

  1. In my somewhat limited experience (two tours in Iraq) there are two conditions in which an illuminated reticle is useful. First is any form of CQB (Close Quarters Battle) where it serves as an instantly recognizable "point & click" reticle. The second is when the background, lighting, use of other optical equipment (such as night vision) renders the reticle difficult to distinguish. This is quite variable, and nearly unpredictable.
It's another tool; useful to have but not end-all-be-all. FWIW, I have illuminated reticles on all my optics, and use it as & when it's useful.

  2. I've used one. They can be useful if shooting against a background where black doesn't stand out (Trees, Shadows). Although the cheapie one I got that did a ridiculous number of colors died, the company that sold it did replace it for free. I have yet to remount it.

  3. They're very helpful in those conditions. For instance, a black reticle on a black bear in the black woods is very hard to see. Likewise a black reticle on a near-black beaver in black water at night is very hard to see. You can test this yourself on a large black bullseye target at night. Try to put your aiming point exactly in the 10-ring.
