Having reassembled my mill, it is time to tram, which verifies that the axes are all perpendicular to each others. Idealyy, I would put dial micrometer in the quill and move it along all these axes, verifying that nothimg moves as I advance along each axis. Ome of you nice people gave me a very precise dial micrometer but I have yet to figure out to attach it to the quill in a way that is stable.
Instead, I use the edge finder. If I can move along the edge of the mill table without any movement, we are good. Of course, at the end of a couple inches of motion, you need to move the edge finder to make sure it has not deviated the other direction. At least to .001" in X and Y over several inches of travel, it is okay. Without a way to mount the caliper in the quill, I will probably put an end mill in place and move in X and Y to see if anything is trimmed off.
