Official Language

Switzerland has four official languages.  It is not like Canada where every sign everywhere is in both English and French.  Tourist-facing stuff tends to have French, German, and English.  But once we left Geneva, signs were generally in German and English

  1. When I went there in 2003, I didn't notice many English signs. The citizens have to learn German and French and Italian, so there isn't a lot of room in the school curriculum for another language, We rented an Opel Omega wagon, which was about the size of a Passat wagon or something from Audi. It was really nice to just raise the tail gate and shove the suitcases in without standing in the rain trying to fit everything in. The "check engine light did go on for a few days; the user's manual in German wasn't much use, so I had a discussion in German with an Italian Mechanic from Mercedes about what he thought I should do. We agreed that in the absence of some more concrete problem I should just drive it.
