Universal Background Checks: Shouldn’t We Review the Statistics?

  1. I have a question about the article. you state "Six states require them for all private party transfers of firearms: California, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, and Rhode Island."

I don't believe Maryland requires a background check for non-regulated rifles and shotguns. Handguns and those longarms appearing on the regulated list require going through a FFL or the MSP and background checks. After Oct 1, 2013, those longarms on the regulated list will be banned for sale in MD and any of the numerious semi-autos which will still be available (without the evil features like a flash hider or folding stock) will not require a background check.

    Thanks.

  2. Good catch: Maryland's statute refers to regulated firearms, which means handguns and a long list of "assault weapons." I will have to revise the SSRN article slightly.
