This wonderful ability to tap CFC seemed to be failing. No. An 8-32 tap and a 6-32 tap are amazingly similar in size and appearance. One of them produces holes that will not hold a 6-32 screw reliably. What makes especially painful is that 6-32 and 8-32 threads are just close enough that it feels like the screw is threading.

Never Store 6-32 and 8-32 Taps Adjacent

I was taught to use nail polish of different colors on similar types of taps. A dot of red on one and black on the other (and a different color for fine and coarse) makes it much harder to screw up.
ReplyDeleteAlso use calipers on drills to make sure they are the right size.
YMMV and all that. I need such crutches to help me because I am "less than perfect".
