You are doubtless familiar with the Antikythera device, an analog astronomical calculator used for navigation in the classical world. Its sophistication and complexity do not fit with the traditional view of the classical period. How did they make something with precise gears and shafts. I found a YouTube channel by a guy showing how with surprisingly simple tools, you can make drills and lathes to make perfectly round cylinders, which is at the core of nearly all machined parts.
If you go all post-apocalyptic, I have confidence that the scraps of civilization will be used to bring the industrial world back pretty quickly. This guy shows that you do not even need electric motors to get started.
Didn't you say several years ago that a simple bolt with threads could be used to create very fine measurements? It has been a long time, so my memory may be slightly fogged.
ReplyDeleteyes. 1/4-20 screw is .05" per turn. Getting 50 divisions gets you .001" movements.
Deletehttps://www.instructables.com/ has some projects on making such tools from scrap engine blocks...which post apocalypse will likely be in great supply.
