Pretty clearly, the whole population does not need to do so to be an effective deterrent. Even 1% of the population showing up with a rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition can make such an exercise impossible. Can you find 1% of Americans ready to risk death to prevent genocide? I am absolutely sure of it.
The older you get, the less risky that seems. A person who knows that the next ten years will be progressively worse health with no prospect of improvement has even less reason to back down than a 30-year-old.
Still, you reach the point where you wonder if you would be a net gain to the revolution or not. At 70 or 80, you are not going to be jumping over fences or dragging fallen comrades back from the front.
I was organizing the contents of my gun safe. How many 20 round M1A magazines do I have? I have no idea. More than I will ever use up or misplace, this is certain.
I have no intention of selling off defensive guns. I do wonder how much need I really have for rifles that I can use for 500 yard shots.
I remember when we were moving out of our apartment at 857 3rd St., Santa Monica. My father was speaking to our upstairs neighbor. We were all moving so the new owner could build an apartment building. "Maybe the hippies have it right, and your possessions own you." Stuff accumulates and owns you.
