How Do They Do That?

The heads-up display shows the speed limit.  That must be a huge database and one updated for construction zones.  No, the cars reads the signs

  1. The one 'gotcha' to be aware of is that it requires a current OnStar subscription.

This tells me that at least some of the image processing may be being done using remote servers, not locally to the car (which implies that data / images are being uploaded on a regular basis).

An interesting test would be to see if it correctly reads an obscured (snow-covered) sign. If so, they are keeping some form of database, and your car is probably helping them maintain it.

  2. I've had speed-limit displays on a Volkswagen and on many Garmin GPS units -- for both it really was a big database.
One could tell because changes to speed limits would not match the display until the next year's map update.

  3. My old Garmin GPS also displays the speed limit and my speed. It shows my speed in red if it's above the listed speed limit. It doesn't read any signs.
