Pleased to report that I was able to check my gun with three loaded magazines on Alaska Air. Here, I just unlocked the case, inserted magazine, and released the slide stop.
The biggest potential difference being that your counter check-in person lives in your state, has seen a gun before, and actually can look at one without pissing themselves.
