I had a piece of 2.5" diameter acetal so I cut off a slice, trimmed it to .501" thick, then bored a 1.5" hole through the center with a Forstner bit on the lathe. (That oversimplified it. Cutting that much acetal in one pass is clumsy and ugly so I drilled through the center with a 1/4" drill bit first, then a 1/2" Forstner bit, then the 1 1/2" bit.) Then to get 3 1/4" holes at 120 degrees each, I put the ring on the rotating table and entered commands to drop the bit to 0" then down to -.65", back to 1", rotate 120 degrees and repeat. (If I had been making more than one, a program would have been neat to watch running.)
Now I just to work up the energy to get Big Bertha out of his box, clean the mirror, which is a big task with such a big mirror and then reassembly.
