Her first thought and mine was that someone put a scanner on the front of the ATM. The cleek in the store spoke little English. Our online account showed the transaction she had just completed.
I called the credit union. After hours goes to somewhere with cheap labor but at least English sufficiently free of accent that he could well have been an American.
He agreed it was odd, but he said some ATMs actually interrogate your card as you get close. Think of this as an aggressive tap card interrogation. He had me turn on alerts for all accounts just in case.
Do any of you have aggressive ATMs?
Never seen that behavior but do not want. If I need to know my balance, I'll ask the ATM for it or check the bank's app on my phone.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of such a thing...but I also keep my cards in an RFID-proof wallet. (And yes, I have tested it by holding it up against card readers.)
ReplyDeleteThe "interrogate a card from a distance" is why they started offering RFID blocking wallets. Worth upgrading.
