Interesting Aspect of Milling Carbon Fiber Composite

Milling aluminum or acetal seems to produce big chips that have enough energy or a sufficiently good ballistic coefficient to go quite a long ways.  Carbon Fiber produces something like black dust amd it accumulates in a polite little pile under the milling operations.

UPDATE: I realized that I needed six squares not four.  This time, I am cutting .01" depth each pass and 25 inches/minute seems to be working just fine.

  1. be careful with that dust. The fibers can float a long time and will stick in your lungs to your detriment later. Like asbestos or fiberglass it can cause issues.

Most of the dust that falls is the resin binder, not the carbon fiber.

  2. Please be careful not to breathe the dust. I would recommend a dust respirator (fitted respirator complete with exhalation valve, not just a 'dust mask').

You probably also want gloves and goggles.

Note that the dust is abrasive, so you will NOT want to leave on your mill ways...

  3. Not good to get on your skin either. I used to work with that stuff on the 787. The super fluffy itch powder will ruin you day. If vacuuming, be sure to have a good HEPA filter, and don't even THINK of using compressed air.
