Secret Service on Mass Murders

MASS ATTACKS IN PUBLIC SPACES - 2017

MENTAL HEALTH: Nearly two-thirds of the attackers (n = 18, 64%) experienced mental health symptoms prior to their attacks. The most common symptoms observed were related to psychosis (e.g., paranoia, hallucinations, or delusions) and suicidal thoughts (see Table 1). Further, some attackers (n = 7, 25%) had been hospitalized for treatment or prescribed psychiatric medications prior to their attacks

Yet Another Case for Private or Home Schooling

4/2/18 CNN:
(CNN)Oklahoma and Kentucky teachers are walking off the job Monday and holding rallies in their state capitols to pressure lawmakers.
Inspired by the West Virginia strike in which teachers demanded and got a pay raise from state leaders, a wave of other states, including Oklahoma, Kentucky and Arizona, are taking similar action.
Educators are organizing and publicly pressuring state lawmakers over issues such as education funding, teacher salaries and pension reform.
While I am sympathetic about teacher pay, which reflects both oversupply of teachers and general disrespect for formal education, this is a reminder that public schools may stop operating pretty easily.  Private schools do not generally have this problem for several reasons:

1. A lot of private schools are faith-based and teachers are there for many reasons other than money.

2. Seldom unionized, so hard to organize a walkout even as large as one school, much less on a city or county basis.

For parents who rely on there being places to drop the kids while at work, these walkouts can be a serious inconvenience.  If you have already made the decision to homeschool, then this is not such an inconvenience.  Unless you are poorly educated yourself, you can homeschool.  I am seeing some very effective results even from homes where the parents are not well-educated.

Those Annoying Notifications That I Have Mentioned

That appear in the lower right corner are not from the browser.  They are some sort of Windows 7 notification.  These come from applications like Thunderbird telling me new emails have arrived and from Space.com, and one of the conservative Canadian bloggers.  I wanted them dead because if I click in that area, even after the message disappears, I am taken to that webpage.  How do I turn them off?  What are they called, so that I can search for a method of removing them?

Example:

I Think the World is About to Change Forever

The Drive:

Lockheed Martin has quietly obtained a patent associated with its design for a potentially revolutionary compact fusion reactor, or CFR. If this project has been progressing on schedule, the company could debut a prototype system that size of shipping container, but capable of powering a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier or 80,000 homes, sometime in the next year or so.
The patent, for a portion of the confinement system, or embodiment, is dated Feb. 15, 2018. The Maryland-headquartered defense contractor had filed a provisional claim on April 3, 2013 and a formal application nearly a year later. Our good friend Stephen Trimble, chief of Flightglobal's Americas Bureau, subsequently spotted it and Tweeted out its basic details.
If the revolutionary nature of this is not clear: the oceans are full of deuterium.  Fusion reactors makes fission reactors look lazy and dirty.  Fusion's byproducts are helium (not radioactive) and heat.  The insanely optimistic Atomic Age predictions for a future where electricity would be so cheap it would not be metered seem possible.

Not Sure the Relative Populations, But An Amazing Headline

Democrat Civil War: Pass the Popcorn

The Daily Wire:
Hillary Clinton fired back at her critics on the left late Friday, claiming that it was "sexism" that drove Democrats, in the days following the 2016 Presidential election, to tell her to keep quiet about what caused her devastating loss to now-President Donald Trump.
The failed Presidential candidate hissed directly at Democratic leaders in her speech: "They never said that to any man who was not elected."
"I was really struck by how people said that to me - you know, mostly people in the press, for whatever reason - mostly, 'Go away, go away,'" Clinton told a gathered crowd at Rutgers University, according to MSNBC. "And I had one of the young people who works for me go back and do a bit of research. They never said that to any man who was not elected. I was kind of struck by that."
But then again, they never had a man with the media so blatantly in their pocket going up against a man almost as vulgar as your husband and lose.
