Never Trust a Human

I have used TurboTax since it arrived on DVDs.  Once I found it added my Schwab account capital gains twice with predictable bad results but generally it has been reliable.

In 2022 and 2023 in the hopes that it would be less work, we hired TurboTax professionals to do the taxes for us.  It was not any faster.  Today we learned from the Idaho Tax Commission that TurboTax experts were not.  They deducted my IRA retirement distributions as Idaho state employee retirement distributions.  Unsurprisingly, we owe them a few thousand dollars.  A tax account we consulted suggested TurboTax owes us the interest and penalties.  I think the money we paid their "experts" should also be refunded.

  1. If you have especially complicated returns - you run a business, have a partnership, etc. - it can be worthwhile to pay a CPA. But TurboTax even handles the investments I have in Canada correctly these days. (It didn't always do that 20 years ago)

No one cares about your stuff as much as you do.

  2. That's why I do it myself. If anyone or anything else did it, I'd still have to go behind them and check their work before I signed it, which means I might as well do it myself. Only a few minor errors found in the last 40+ years. Biggest problem is getting forms and instructions timely from the IRS and the state. They won't even send me a tax form anymore unless I special order it.
