Successfully got around the Microsoft login problem, but I have no idea how.  I downloaded VM Player and installed it.  Now waiting for the Mint Linux ISO download.  It looks like firefox doesn't work with W8.

I have Firefox running on Window 8. So it's possible. (The only reason I have Win 8 on this machine is for Netflix.)

Virtual Box ( is way better than VM Player, not being a Microsoft product. has pre-made Virtual Box VM machine images, including Mint 14.

Go straight for Chrome. Firefox behaves like IE on tequila, specially with every Java or Flash update.

Running Firefox, latest version, on Windows 8.1 here. I can't help but think there is something amiss with the install of Win8 on your new machine.

If Firefox does not work, try Chrome. I was a happy Firefox user but I switched to Chrome because Firefox does not seem to adapt fast enough to a number of changes. (It's a long story, I'm not going to get into it here.)

Importing bookmarks is fairly simple. For your convenience, here is a link on how to do so.

I wish I could give you more hints about Windows 8, but I've avoided it like the plague. (I'm with you, I've got no clue why Microsoft screwed up 8 so bad when 7 rocked!)
