They Are Not Even Our Friends

 From gunpolicy.org:

“Harmless” .22 calibre Rabbit Rifles Kill More People Than Any Other Type of Gun Contrary to their popular image as low-powered “bunny guns,” .22-calibre rimfire rifles are commonly used in multiple shootings. In seven recent mass(1) killings involving .22 rifles in Australia and New Zealand alone, 54 people died by gunfire

Yes, they are setting up to ban rimfires.  But it makes you wonder how many semiautomatic mass murders in the U.S. involve rimfire rifles, which are generally exempted from A/W bans.  Yes, paranoid schizophrenic used a  Ruger 10/22 to murder 3 and wound 7.  There seem to be a lot of Ruger 10/22s used.  Cascade Mall.

  1. It's not the number, it's the theory.
And this is the lower example of the Goldilocks rule on guns. "This gun's too strong, so we can't allow it." (how many crimes have been committed with 50 caliber bolt action rifles in the last thirty years).
And this one's too weak, so what use is it? So we'll ban it."
There isn't anything that's just right, so don't think of that.

  3. The Ruger 10/22 is the Cessna 172 of rifles. There are so many used in shootings (crashed in the case of the Cessna) because there are so many produced and sold. By contrast, how many murders are committed with Chiappa Rhinos?
