A Sabrent hard disk enclosure arrived today, and I inserted the old Toshiba hard disk in the hopes of retrieving some old files from it. It is no longer making weird noises or failing. IO suspect the spindle problem was just overheating related. At least I will have a 120GB USB drive to use for backups. I am still waiting for the replacement fan, but the silver thermal paste arrived.
The Sabrent enclosure is very cool: no screws. Just slide the cover off, put the SATA drive inside, close the cover, plug in the USB 3.0 cable. Very nice!
