My wife's Toshiba had Windows 7 on it when webought it, but I ended up installing Windows 7 from a retail version when I replaced the hard drive and of course Windows wants the product key which of course is already in use on the antique HP laptop. How to retrieve the product key off the old drive? There are a number of programs out there that will retrieve it from your current drive or an external USB drive. I bought one, and it retrieved a plausible Windows 7 product key from the old drive.
My ThinkPad drive was utterly dead. But I found that I could order recovery DVDs for it from Lenovo for $50.
