Removing Artificial Dyes

3/3/25 Bloomberg reports on snack industry (most of these in my mind barely qualify as "food") efforts to remove artificial dyes from their products.   In some cases, they are creating parallel products so that those intent on their brightly colored Flaming Hot Ruffles can continue on that line until they get used to the idea of a natural coloration snack, ot for this product,  their mouths cease to function except as flamethrower.

I think there is a lot to be said for making sure that if we add anything to food or its simulations, that they are safe or at least serve some useful purpose.  (Making your tongue a spectrum color is not useful, except for attracting insects.)  It seems that at least Frito-Lay is trying to get ahead of the regulatory curve on this.

10/19/22 Daily Mail reports on a big supermarket chain called Aldi:

"Budget supermarket Aldi is considering selling edible insect recipe kits as the cost of living crisis hits families."

I confess that this may just be a cultural bias against creatures that when magnified look like aliens from another galaxy.  But have we really reached a nearly Soylent Green level of human tragedy?

Scary Thanksgiving Food

I was surprised and pleased to see a huge unsold quantity at Winco two days after Thanksgiving.  Heinz canned gravy.  Why would you not make it yourself?
