What Sci-Fi used to be. A clear knowledge of a variety of sciences, and an engaging and mysterious plot. I am about four chapters in and I am utterly hooked.
He is one of my favorite SF authors, precisely for those reasons. It is simply a joy to be able to buy an author's book on name alone and know that you will have good entertainment absent any agenda.

Alas, the techno-neepery deteriorated into minutiae. ("What will I do if I drop the bolts holding on this access panel?") And the "My memory keeps coming back in bits and pieces" gimmick petered out. I, too, was really looking forward to reading a new Andy Weir novel, but ended up disappointed. (Just my opinion, of course.)

Weir's The Martian is worthy of Heinlein and Pournelle
