Crash On The Test Flight: Not Effective Marketing

From Associated Press:
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - A new Russian-made civilian plane carrying 50 people went missing in Indonesia while flying over mountains Wednesday during a demonstration flight for potential buyers and journalists, officials said.
Soviet airliners were unsafe disasters.  Russian airliners seem to be following the same path...down.

  1. Airbus A-320 began its career from a crash at demo flight as well.

  2. Yeah, Air France Flight 296 was pretty much another Controlled Flight Into Terrain; one would think a pilot, if flying very low (100 feet) for a demo would at least have his jet engines spooled up (it takes a bit for them to provide serious thrust when at minimum idle power).

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a similar crash (there is a report that the air crew asked ATC for a 10,000 to 6,000 feet unplanned descent). But with no survivors and Russian authorities being so untrustworthy, that wouldn't be believed by many I'm sure. And we can be pretty certain Indonesia doesn't have a world-class accident investigation agency.

  3. It's too early to speculate too much, but I think that flying at 6000 ft in an unfamiliar area with 7200 ft mountains might not be a wise idea for a demo.

  4. There is some speculation that one of the invited guests may have been in the chair at the time.

  5. Point of information. This was a joint venture between sukhoi and Boeing.
