After looking over the document, I couldn't help but think: If only I had known about this sooner! Then I could have saved LOTS of money getting a Math PhD...but then, I wouldn't have been able to learn so much math!I tend to think "certification" and it's sibling "accreditation" is a bit over-rated. A good alternative would be to go back to "apprenticeships" for everything--including lawyers and doctors--but our society is so invested in, and dependent on, certification, that such a thing would be very difficult to do.I often wonder if I would have become a professor if I had been "apprenticed" rather than "thrown to the wolves" as a graduate student. But then, it's also likely that I didn't like the entire University schooling structure as well, and partially became repulsed towards that.
