I'm not sure if it's a concern here, but after 5 years or so I find that the polyurethane foam begins to degrade by both crumbling into small dusty pieces AND becoming sticky.
ReplyDeleteIt's quite difficult to clean the residue from stuff that's been in a case with degraded foam, so in my industry people tend to insert any instrument in a plastic-bag before inserting the bagged instrument into the formed-foam of the case.
I've also heard of outgassing leaving haze on glass, and that pick and pluck tends to retain moisture, so for many reasons the baggie and desiccant are important.
