A Nice Feature of Sherline's Machine Tools

Many parts of the vertical mill and lathe are common.  The spindle motor and headstock are identical except for whether the label says vertical mill model number or lathe model number.

At the moment this is very useful.   I am still waiting for an RMA number to send back the shorting out spindle motor & motor controller.  While waiting for that; i figured out how to continue work on the wide angle finder using the lathe.

But of course, the 3" 3-jaw chuck is frozen on the lathe spindle. I used their frozen chuck instructions which are promised to work 90% of the time.  I have the 10% situation.

I have a 2.5" 3-jaw chuck which is big enough (just).  So i have transplanted the vertical mill headstock on to the lathe.  Voila!  I can get some of this done while waiting for Sherline to fix the two broken parts.

  1. A couple of mechanic's suggestions for the stuck chuck.
    1. A little heat. Propane torch.
    2. Get an old (sacrificial) impact socket big enough to slide over the outside of the chuck and long enough to reach past the chuck's access holes. Cut slots in the socket 180 degrees apart and the same width as the access hole diameter. Put your little bar through the access hole and slide the socket over the chuck with the bar in the slots of the socket. With another bar holding the headstock spindle, apply an impact wrench to the socket. You may need some helping hands or tape or something, and watch your eyes.

    1. I have no torch. Boiling water and WD-40 did nothing. I have no impact socket that big. I have a car mechanic/Second Amendment litigator to help me next.

    2. 10-4, you can get a propane torch at Home Depot or Walmart or somewhere for like $10. I suppose one could make the socket tool from a piece of capped heavy pipe but would need an end with a square hole, or could weld a bolt in the end and use a smaller socket. That solution requires some welding fabricobbling.
