Of course I can't find my True West magazine issue with the article on Charles Russell's giant mural he painted in 1925 as a commissioned painting for the Los Angeles Oil Millionaire Edward L. Doheny.
ReplyDeleteRussell painted what he always liked to paint, Indians, cattle, Vaqueros, bears, deer, Hacienda owners, and mountain men and trappers. He was almost out of canvas when his wife suggested that considering that Doheny had made his money in the new oil business, he might want to put some oil derricks in as a nod to how Doheny made his money to be able to pay Russell so generously for his skill as an artist. Consequently, in the far right, upper corner, just visible above a mountain pass, are three small oil derricks.
