I was reading a mass murder in which the murderer took revenge for being expelled from the "county infirmary." Was that a public hospital? No. At some point in the 19th century, some states renamed the county poorhouse to county infirmary, where the indigent, mentally ill, and orphans worked the land and livestock to keep themselves fed and shelter over their heads. The mentally ill and orphans were later separated into different institutions for the protection of all.
