More lessons learned. Cutting works fine. Baking the carriage up is what is pulling the workpiece from the chuck.just enough drag to pull it out.
Better solution to my problem: buying an M29x1.0 die to put an external thread on the ends of the tube so it screws into the diagonal. To my shock and surprise, this size is about $20. It is 65mm diameter, but I already have a site holder that size.
