On the Wednesday, January 18 broadcast of CNN’s The Situation Room, host Wolf Blitzer aired a segment with a chyron featuring the headline “Developing Now.” During that “developing” segment, Blitzer and correspondent Brian Todd discussed what would happen if the unthinkable occurred on January 20.Blitzer introduced the segment, saying, “What if an incoming president and his immediate successors were wiped out on day one?” and from there, CNN contributor Brian Todd took over to outline the line of succession if an attack blew up the inaugural dais, killing both Trump and Pence. The upshot was that in the case of both heads of state being killed, the Secretary of State would take over. Currently that man is Secretary of State John Kerry, But in case some objected because his office would also end as of noon on Inauguration Day, then it would be the Speaker of the House — Republican Paul Ryan — or even Obama’s Under Secretary for Political Affairs Tom Shannon.

Speaker of the House.....the cabinet-level appointments end with the presidency at Noon, EST, 20 Jan.
ReplyDeleteThank Goodness.
1) I don't believe the tenure of a cabinet Secretary ends with the term of office of the appointing President. Obama retained Secretary of Defense Gates from the Bush administration, and I don't recall any "re-appointment" proceeding - i.e. there was no "re-confirmation" vote - I'm sure that at least a few far-left Democrats would have voted no. Herbert Hoover was appointed Secretary of Commerce by Harding, and served until nominated for President in 1928. Several 19th century Secretaries of States served for a few days after the change of President: John Calhoun in 1845, James Buchanan in 1849, Jeremiah Black in 1861, Hamilton Fish in 1877, and others.
ReplyDelete2) The Secretary of State succeeds only after the Speaker (Ryan) and Senate President pro tem (Hatch). Both of them might be present at the inauguration ceremony, but I suspect one will not, just in case. Or he'll be present, but not in attendance on the Presidential party.
Just imagine if some talking head had discussed what would happen should His Elevatedness Obama had been dispatched before taking office.
ReplyDeleteThat talking head would almost certainly have been hung on a pike in front of the WH, don't you think?
This is CNN's sly way of suggesting a course of action to certain suggestible violent people. If CNN had any honor they would be ashamed of themselves, but of course they're not.
They are not only purveyors of Fake News, they are disgusting.
