Lindsey Fitzharris, The Butchering Art: Joseph Lister's Quest to Transform the Grisly World of Victorian Medicine. Well, he did not make it less grisly, just less likely to have the operation go well and the patient die. As much a biography of Lister as the science. Very interesting and well-written.
I had assumed from the dust jacket bio (PhD from Oxford, "lives in the English countryside") that she was British. I was watching a PBS documentary where they interviewed her. She's an American and a drop dead gorgeous blonde!
Well she is certainly cute and entertaining based on her "Under the Knife" videos on YouTube. Quite a wicked and sick-and-twisted sense of humor as well.
