And continued by Andrew Jackson and a number of slave-owning sympathizers from the northern states known as "doughfaces." There were some surprising slave-owning southern Presidents. Or they're only surprising to Americans who got the sanitized version of history in 5th, 8th, and 11th Grades. Polk, Pierce, Tyler, and Taylor lived in southern States and owned slaves. At least in the case of Polk, this explains his provocation of war with Mexico and the annexation of Texas.
In my opinion, the modern Democratic Party started with Andrew Jackson and Martin van Buren. The party of Jefferson and Madison, that historians now call the Democratic Republicans, really withered away with John Quincy Adams.
