In other words, he walked away from the mental hospital.
ReplyDeleteNot to put too fine a point on it.
How much longer will we continue this public experiment in treating mental illness the same as physical illness? Somebody with Pneumonia or Multiple Sclerosis or Colon Cancer will eventually find it hard to deny the existence of his illness, something that may or may not happen, and even if it does, MUCH later in the course of the illness.
What was the name of the case decided sometime in the late sixties to the early to mid-seventies that held since not every mental patient, as they were once called, needed the full rubber room and "love me" jacket, smaller outpatient clinics could be used. At least until the meds kicked in and the patient, feeling normal, decided he was cured and stopped taking them, and then went over the hill, as the phrase is used about.military deserters.
Night along the Venice Boardwalk and other such places bear witness to this institutional error.
if he was there under 5150 or 5250, he can not just walk away from there.
