Will You Be Surprised At What Country This Invention Comes From?

02/02/18 U.K. Metro:
A woman in Germany has created anti-rape shorts, which began as a personal project after she was attacked while out running. There are two types of Safe Shorts – underpants and running shorts – and both are made from slash and tear-resistant material, and have a lock as well as an alarm. The shorts are fastened with a cut-resistant cord, which is attached to the waist or pelvic area (depending on which style you have), and then secured with a clip that has a coded padlock. You can access this padlock in seconds with the code, but if someone else tampers with it, a 140 decibel alarm sounds.

I admire her initiative, but why not solve the underlying problem?

TurboTax

Always a source of frustration.  This is the first year that I have eFiled, and IRS is rejecting for wrong IP PIN.  But I can see the number on the forms and it matches the number IRS assigned me.  Thinking of going 20th century and printing instead.

Remember: Voter Fraud is a Myth

Crystal Mason was sentenced to five years in prison this week after she voted in the 2016 election while on parole, according to Dallas ABC affiliate WFAA. Mason was on parole after serving time for a federal tax crime, her lawyer said.
"She had a good faith belief she could vote legally and she did so," Mason's attorney Warrent St. John told WFAA.

Where the Left is Taking Us

Our story begins with two Swedish government agencies. The job of the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) is “to ensure good health, social welfare and high-quality health and social care on equal terms for the whole Swedish population.” It is part of the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) is “the authority that considers applications from people who want to take up permanent residence in Sweden, come for a visit, seek protection from persecution or become Swedish citizens.”
On March 24, the two agencies released a four-page brochure. It was entitled “Information for Those who Are Married to Children.” Yes, you read that right. Its cover featured a cheery drawing of a very dark-skinned girl in hijab and a somewhat dark-skinned boy and girl in more Western-looking garb. The style of illustration was recognizable from a thousand children's books. But this wasn't a children's book. It was a brochure for adults living in Sweden whose “spouses” are minors.
Apparently, Sweden has withdrawn the pamphlet.   Even Swedes have their limits.

Why Would an Attorney Withdraw From a Chance to Get Part of the Settlement?

03/30/18 MSN:
Women's rights attorney Gloria Allred has withdrawn from representing Summer Zervos in her defamation suit against President Donald Trump.

"Our withdrawal has nothing to do with the merits of her case against President Trump," Allred said. "We will have no comment regarding the reasons for our firm's withdrawal. We continue to wish Summer the very best in her pursuit of justice."
Zervos, a former contestant on NBC's "The Apprentice," filed a defamation suit against Trump in January 2017, alleging that he defamed her after calling her a liar when she publicly accused him of sexual misconduct....
Zervos alleges she went to Trump for career advice after being cut from the show and that Trump kissed her twice on the lips during a lunch meeting in his New York City office and also kissed her "very aggressively and placed his hand on my breast" on a separate occasion in Beverly Hills. Both alleged incidents happened in 2007.
Allred broke the news of the allegations by holding a press conference with Zervos in California in October of 2016 —just weeks before the presidential election.
Just weeks before the election--just like the Roy Moore allegations.  Curious.  I do not doubt that many of the accusations of misconduct are real, but stuff like this makes me wonder how many are just Democratic Party politics.

Shooting Star 8 Round Magazine

Anyone used these for M1911A1?  Are these reliable?   I was watching a video where a Rock Island Armory M1911A1 was not completely reliable with 8 Round Colt magazines.  Some years ago, I bought a conversion kit from a company called Magpack that was speed to convert a standard M1911 7 rounder to 8 rounds by replacing the spring and follower.  It was a failure.  It would not feed the first round.

See Scott Run

This is emphatically not a criticism of this guy running for state legislature.  I know nothing about him.  I'm just amused by his campaign sign: C. Scott Grow.  The rest of the basal reading primer goes:
See Scott Run.
See Scott Run for Public Office.
Run, Scott, run.

Need This Ann Coulter Quote

It was along the lines of the Supreme Court decided that majorities are not allowed to decide whether abortions are legal, except when it is a majority of the Supreme Court.  I would love to find that quote in all its Ann Coulter snarky splendor.

CNN Misleads With Headline Again

3/29/18 CNN:
Sessions does not appoint second special counsel to review FBI misconduct claims
But in the article:
Instead, Sessions revealed Thursday that Utah's top federal prosecutor, John Huber, is looking into allegations that the FBI abused its powers in surveilling a former Trump campaign adviser, and claims that more should have been done to investigate Hillary Clinton's ties to a Russian nuclear energy agency.
Hmmm.  The agent in charge decides against while his wife received hundreds of thousands in campaign contributions from Clinton associates?  Nothing suspicious there.  And:
The announcement comes one day after the Justice Department's internal watchdog office confirmed it would review how the FBI obtained a warrant to monitor Trump foreign policy aide Carter Page, as well as the bureau's relationship with Christopher Steele, the author of the Trump dossier.

Let's Not Disappoint Him

To quote the author of the Bill of Rights: "The strength of this Colony will lie chiefly in the rifle-men of the Upland Counties, of whom we shall have great numbers.  You would be astonished at the perfection this art is brought to.  The most inexpert hands rec[k]on it an indifferent shot to miss the bigness of a man's face at the distance of 100 Yards.  I am far from being among the best & should not often miss it on a fair trial at that distance.  If we come into an engagement, I make no doubt but the officers of the enemy will fall at the distance before they get [within] 150 or 200 Yards.  Indeed I believe we have men that would very often hit such a mark 250 Yds."[1]

So, the Problem Was Real

Instapundit linked to an article about a law aimed at online trafficking of children, and saw it as a symptom of failing to legalize prostitution.  Other libertarians in the comments insisted that there was no real problem.  Today's Idaho Statesman reports:
Craigslist’s personal ads service was no more as of Friday. But before that part of the classifieds website shuttered, Southwest Idaho law enforcement used it this month to arrest 11 men accused of trying to arrange sex with minors.
The allegations against each man differ somewhat. But all of the cases began with an investigator posing as either a child or the parent of a child and communicating through ads posted on the site.
The sting operation was led by the Idaho Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, a collaboration of several law enforcement agencies. Five of the men arrested face state charges in Ada County; the other five are charged in federal court.
Authorities had investigated Jerry Moore, 42, of Weiser, for possible child porn possession last summer but never charged him, prosecutors said.
A few comments:

The big social media companies fought this because the cost of moderation would make their leftist echo chambers unprofitable.  No regulatory advantage there.

The Framers believed in free speech, but this only prohibited prior restraint.  You were still responsible for abuse of that right.  BackPage's efforts to jeep the pimps operating has consequences.

I do not worry about this being used to suppress conservative free speech, anymore than Facebook and Google already do.  I moderate comments here at least in part to make sure criminal acts are not proposed or encouraged.

Corey Feldman Turned Over Too Scary of a Rock, Gets Stabbed

The stabbing comes six weeks after Feldman was cleared in an LAPD sexual battery investigation from an alleged incident last year.
Feldman has publicly stated he was molested by powerful people in the entertainment industry when he was an '80s child star. He has said his close friend - the late Corey Haim - was raped when he was a child by the same industry predators.
Feldman said on "Dr. Oz" in November that Jon Grissom was one of his alleged abusers. He also told Megyn Kelly that convicted sex offender Marty Weiss harmed him as well. However, the LAPD dropped an investigation into his claims later that month.
Three men distracted his security guards, and a fourth stabbed him.  A single attacker might be a stalker, but this was planned.  The fact is that monsters seem heavily present in Hollywood should be no surprise.  It is an industry that makes its money selling how sexy its "meat" is.  Why are we surprised that they see the "meat" as appropriate targets for their confused and out of control sexuality?

The Law Sitting on Trump's Desk About Online Sex Trafficking Needs to Be Signed

Some libertarians insist that this is a tempest in a teapot,  but today's Idaho Statesman reports arrests of 11 men who solicited sex with 15 year olds through Craigslist, who sensibly had since sit down their personals section because of the risk the new law would create.

Why The Left Wants Us Disarmed

As Liliana picks lice from the tangled, thick hair of her boyfriend, Patricio, while they sit together on the sidewalk of a Caracas street, she’s also multi-tasking, keeping a watchful eye on her “family.” When a 10-year-old girl named Danianyeliz kneels down to drink water from a puddle, Liliana reproaches her, urging her to have a sip from a juice bottle they’ve just found in a garbage bag.
At 16, Liliana has become the mother figure for a gang of Venezuelan children and young adults called the Chacao, named after the neighborhood they’ve claimed as their territory. The 15 members, ranging in age from 10 to 23, work together to survive vicious fights for “quality” garbage in crumbling, shortage-plagued Venezuela. Their weapons are knives and sticks and machetes. The prize? Garbage that contains food good enough to eat.
See how wonderfully socialism motivates planning and cooperation?

"We're Not Breaking the Law, Just Informing the Public"

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department, whose leadership opposes the new California sanctuary law that limits cooperation with federal immigration officials, announced Monday that it is now providing public information on when inmates are released from custody.
As of Monday, March 26, an existing “Who’s in Jail” online database includes the date and time of inmates’ release – a move agency officials say will enhance communication with its law enforcement partners.
The release date information applies to all inmates, not just those who are suspected of being in the country illegally.  But the goal is to assist agents with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.

If They Want a Civil War, They May Well Get One

Rarely in my lifetime have I seen the type of civic engagement schoolchildren and their supporters demonstrated in Washington and other major cities throughout the country this past Saturday. These demonstrations demand our respect. They reveal the broad public support for legislation to minimize the risk of mass killings of schoolchildren and others in our society.
That support is a clear sign to lawmakers to enact legislation prohibiting civilian ownership of semiautomatic weapons, increasing the minimum age to buy a gun from 18 to 21 years old, and establishing more comprehensive background checks on all purchasers of firearms. But the demonstrators should seek more effective and more lasting reform. They should demand a repeal of the Second Amendment.
Let's see: 2/3 of both houses of Congress and 37 of 50 states.  Yeah, that's going to happen.

“Commonsense” Gun Control Laws

Supporters of restrictive gun control and “assault weapon” bans insist they only want “commonsense” gun control laws.  But many of these proposals have been tried and found wanting.

1.      1. Mandatory background checks for every gun transfer.  But 13 states have adopted such laws since 1960 when FBI murder statistics became sufficiently reliable to test the effects of these laws on murder rates: California,[1] Hawaii,[2] Illinois,[3] Massachusetts,[4] New Jersey,[5] and Rhode Island.[6]  A few more states have for a few years required such a check for private party transfers of handguns (with a few exceptions such as intrafamily transfers): Maryland,[7] Iowa,[8] Michigan,[9] Nebraska,[10] New York,[11] North Carolina,[12] and Pennsylvania.[13]  Hawaii, North Carolina, and Michigan, passed these laws so recently that we do not have enough data to measure results yet.

Yes, of eight states, three had declines in murder rates, but only two were statistically significant.  Five had increases.  If these laws are really effective, why are the results all over the map?  You would expect at least some consistent direction, unless they really make no difference.  Why?  The federal government has studied how criminally misused guns end up in criminal hands.
As you can see, a strong majority of these guns were obtained by committing felonies: strawman purchases, burglaries, unlicensed gun making,[14]  So why will creating another felony make any difference?

2.      2.  “Requiring a license to own a gun, like a driver’s license.  No one objects to that.”  With a driver’s license issued by any state, I can drive a car in any other state, and the car does not matter.  I can drive a car capable of exceeding the speed limit by a hundred miles per hour (a dangerous criminal offense) or a car with a high capacity gas tank (imagine the hazard of a car with a 80 gallon gas tank in a car crash spilling an explosive fluid around the accident).  I can also fly to any state, buy a car there, and drive it home.  Imagine doing that with a gun license!

3.       3. “Require gun owners to carry insurance to pay for damages caused by their guns.”  Home owners insurance usually covers non-criminal liability and even negligent acts now.[15]  If criminals buy firearms insurance, it won’t cover their criminal actions.

44. “But we require drivers to have car insurance now.”  And are there uninsured drivers out there?  That’s why police officers ask to see your proof of insurance when they pull you over, and most drivers carry uninsured motorist coverage.

5.     5.  “Gun owners should be liable for misuse of stolen guns.”  Why?  Are other victims of crimes liable for subsequent criminal use of their property?  If someone steals your chainsaw and re-enacts “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” should the burglary victim be held liable?

6.       6. “Weapons of war are too dangerous because of mass murders.”  No country uses semiautomatic rifles as weapons of war.  USA Today gathered data on mass murders 2006-2010.  Only about 3/4 involved guns (the rest were “stabbing,”, “blunt force,” “Smoke inhalation/burns.” But even in gun mass murders: 72.9% handguns, 18.5% rifles (8.6% semiautomatic rifles); 8.6% shotguns.  And these were the guns carried, not necessarily used by the killer. )   It would make far more sense to ban handguns than semiautomatic rifles, and more sense to ban knives “blunt objects,” and flammable liquids, if the goal is to reduce mass murders.

7.       7. “You say the Second Amendment protects your ‘right’ to own these guns because they might be needed against a tyrannical government.  Do you really think you can defeat the might of the U.S. government?”  You call them “weapons of war” and say that they would therefore not be useful for that?  Which is it?

8.       8. “Assault weapons are easily converted to full auto.”  But federal law has this covered.

The term 'machinegun' means any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger. The term shall also include the frame or receiver of any such weapon, any part designed and intended solely and exclusively, or combination of parts designed and intended, for use in converting a weapon into a machinegun, and any combination of parts from which a machinegun can be assembled if such parts are in the possession or under the control of a person. [16]

The courts have ruled that readily convertible means “about an 8-hour working day in a properly equipped machine shop.”[17]

9.      9.  “Think of the children killed each year by guns in accidents.”  How many?  In the years 1999-2016, there were 1,163 accidental firearms deaths of children 0-14 or 68 per year.[18]  Each is a tragedy, but 7,181 were killed in vehicle accidents: 422 per year.[19]  Drowning in bathtubs: 1,461, or 85 per year.[20]  Your focus is wrong.

110.   “Why are you leaving out older children?”  The Centers for Disease Control has age categories to 14, and 15-19.  That includes adults and some gang members.  Those are not children in the usual sense of the word.

111.   “Why not ban ‘assault weapons’ and high capacity magazines?  Who needs them?”  Why ban them?  They are seldom criminally misused.  When Congress passed the 1994 ban on new manufacture, the Clinton Administration directed the National Institute of Justice to examine the effects of the new law.  They found a 6.7% reduction in murder rates in the 15 states where the federal ban could have made a difference.  But Roth and Koper also admitted that this reduction was not statistically significant.  Because assault weapons had been used in a tiny percentage of murders before the ban, “it is highly improbable that the assault weapons ban produced an effect this large….”[21]  What about the effects of rapid fire and large capacity magazines?  “The ban did not produce declines in the average number of victims per incident of gun murder or gun murder victims with multiple wounds.”  What about “protecting police officers,” the excuse offered repeatedly for the ban?  There was a decline in assault weapons used to murder police officers, but Roth and Koper also admitted that “such incidents are sufficiently rare” that it impossible to determine whether the law reduced total gun murders of police officers.[22]

Citibank Just Joined The SJWs

They have announced a new set of rules for their merchants, prohibiting them from selling guns to 18-21 year olds, selling high capacity magazines and generally doing the bidding of Bloomberg.  Time to cancel your Citibank card.  This hurts because I have had one since 1977.  I understand they are getting a lot of cancelation calls for this reason.   Are there any Mastercard relationships that NRA still has?   Also,  Citibank is violating Georgia law with this one. http://codes.findlaw.com/ga/title-10-commerce-and-trade/ga-code-sect-10-1-439-2.html

Why I Am Glad That I Live in a "Deplorable" County

The Garden Valley School District has stored semi-automatic rifles in safes around its school building — which houses about 250 students in pre-k through 12th grades — since the 2014-15 school year.
The number of guns and safes, some of which are in classrooms, is a closely guarded secret.
Superintendent Greg Alexander won’t disclose how many teachers and staff have been trained to use the guns, other than to say “numerous.”

Doing the Job We Expect and Cheer

Why is this school shooting getting so little media attention?  3/20/18 CNN:
A 17-year-old male student shot two other students at Great Mills High School in Maryland on Tuesday morning before a school resource officer engaged him and stopped the threat, authorities said.
The incident began in a school hallway at 7:55 a.m., just before classes started. Authorities say Austin Wyatt Rollins, armed with a handgun, shot a female and a male student. The shooter had a prior relationship with the female student, St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said.
School resource officer Blaine Gaskill responded to the scene in less than a minute, the sheriff said. Gaskill fired a round at the shooter, and the shooter fired a round simultaneously, Cameron said.
Darn, CNN is probably saying.  There's not enough of a pddule to get an adequate dance going.  Where is the ad revenue?   Oh yes, it does not involve a rifle but the far more common handgun.
