Is IRS Hot to Collect Penalties for Failure to File 1099s?
I need to file a Form 1099 for a contractor for ScopeRoller for last year. Why can't I fill in this form either online, or at least fill in the blanks and print it for mailing? They provide a form which can be filled in with Acrobat, but you can't print that form or transfer it to one you can print. Who still has a typewriter?
Strange, at least in times past forms like the 1040 could be filled out in Acrobat and printed. Maybe they want you to file electronically---well, no maybe about that!---but use a 3rd party, for as I recall the Congress has constrained them from direct filing?
ReplyDeleteYou can sometimes fill the form online, save it as another file name locally, and print it from your local machine.
ReplyDeleteOr screen print the thing....
If all else fails, use an online service that fills out the form(s) and mails them for you. Typically $4–$5/form. Very useful for W-2s, etc.
ReplyDeleteWow: "The official printed version of Copy A of this IRS form is
ReplyDeletescannable, but the online version of it, printed from this website, is not. Do not print and file
copy A downloaded from this website; a penalty may be imposed for filing with the IRS
information return forms that can’t be scanned."
So they are happy to mail you paper versions of the form, but won't provide a downloadable version that is legal to file.
If you could format the entry fields to print in the right places, one could print right onto the pre-printed official IRS form paper. I wonder if there is some way to take advantage of the red color to do a photocopy of the form information (less what is in red) onto the official paper form?
Can you post the complete URL link to the form you got on the IRS.gov website? Then maybe we can see if we have the same problem using acrobat and other readers.
ReplyDeleteIf it's just one 1099, you can fill it out by hand.
ReplyDeleteAre you using quickbooks at all? If you're using quickbooks, it's pretty easy to do them as well. You set it up in vendor payments and you can print on the preprinted 1099 forms.
They messed with this a couple of years ago. I believe you can fill in the form and then print to something like CutePDF, which will simply produce another PDF.
