If you watch season 3 of the TV show 'Justified' one of the antagonists, Robert Quarles, has a rig like this. It turns out badly for him in the end when he is... disarmed.
Of course, TV being fiction (especially when it comes to guns) and if the thing jams they just re-shoot the scene... etc.
The practicality of such a thing and the engineering involved to make it reliable seem like too much trouble.
