No surprise; it burns a lot of calories to warm up near-freezing air.
We drove to Elk Island National Park east of Edmonton last night, seeking clear skies and aurorae. The park is in a dark sky preserve. But there were only occasional blue sky patches, and it wasn't very dark until about 9:00 PM. It appears a clear patch is headed this direction from the west today, and we are headed west tonight to a spot that promises to be very dark according to this map.
Elk Island was still a nice visit; we saw beaver lodges and Wood Bison, and heard wolves howling in the distance.
