Where Did All the Workers Go?
My wife made a service appointment for her Hyundai in August through the dealership web page. She got there today and this was news to them. She was able to make an appointment for tomorrow. But thst is only the oil change. Warranty work is months out; there are no mechanics.
Yes.
ReplyDeleteEverybody has been told that work is for suckers and that the government will give you free money, or that mommy will always take care of you.
They've also been told that they can be artists, writers, of internet personalities and that manual labor is unnecessary and unrewarded.
In the future, auto mechanics and plumbers will be paid as well as doctors are today.
The salaries of physicians varies quite a bit - family practice, internal medicine, psychiatry tend to be much lower than (say) surgical specialties like cardiac, neurosurgeons, etc. Of course their malpractice premiums are quite a bit higher too.
DeleteA med school classmate of mine is a diagnostic radiologist. He lives on one of the Hawaiian islands, reads mammograms in the mornings, three days a week, makes well into a solid 7-figures, and his malpractice premiums are more than my salary as an emergency physician (which is fairly median for physicians over all, I got paid more than most).
Doctors do not seem in short supply. From, referral by my cardiologist to surgery was three weeks.
DeleteDealers charge in excess of $100/hr for service. Mechanics make far less than that, and are responsible for purchasing their own tools
