It Is Sad That This Guy Failed to Consider the Obvious Consequences

 Do you suppose someone who owns a gun store might be practiced and ready for an attempted robbery?

This miscreant could think from A to B just fine, but, in the words of Josephine Tey (Elizabeth MacIntosh's Pen name for the Inspector Grant mystery series from seventy years ago, they just can't make the jump to C. They will stand there, looking, but they just can't get from B to C.
